Matching outfits look unnatural and uncomfortable. Modern portraiture is more about capturing personality. What better visual cues do we give about ourselves than through our adornment? Is Billy smiling? Is Tommy making a face? Try not to think about the kids and let your photographer handle the heavy lifting of getting those natural looking expressions from your kiddos. Thank you! Think complimentary tones and styles but don't think you need to all wear the same colors or style outfits. Let your personality shine through and capture what your family looks like today-it's cool if you let little suzie dress herself because in 20 years, you'll be able to look back and see how early her fashion sense asserted itself! It's much more important that your outfits and accessories are a reflection of you than to be matching. Oh-and comfort! If you're uncomfortable, it will show in pictures. If everyone is wearing their own thing, it tends to look messy and muddled. The clothing doesn't need to be exactly the same, but it should match stylistically and in color. For instance, everyone might wear khaki pants and a white shirt. The women might wear a blouse and the men a button-down. Doing this will make even a average photo look decent, and a good photo look great.
